In parallel with taking water samples in the regular manner, vane meters are used to measure the flow velocities at various depths and in various parts of the watercourse.
From the data the flow profile of the watercourse can be compiled and the volumetric flow rate ascertained.

Placing the concentrations ascertained for the elements and compounds examined in relation to the volumetric flow rate reveals the relevant contaminant loads.
